I Let My Mother Choose My Outfits for a Week

I Let My Mother Choose My Outfits for a Week

When it comes to personality, my mother and I are identical. Same girl. Thirty years apart. Our personal style could not be any more opposite. If I could describe my style, it would be classic with a twist. For example a nice classic black blazer is cute, but if you put a sequin pineapple on the back, then it is a closet must-have. My mother’s style is classified by two words: top + skirt. She doesn’t have time to dilly-dally with colors or patterns if it is a nice cut and it fits her she’s wearing it. So I asked my mother to choose seven outfits for me with absolutely no rules attached. So let’s jump right in!

Monday

Whataburger dress + peep-toe boots

Pretty good start! My super comfortable (self-named) Whataburger dress from Amazon paired with chunky heels was perfect for running errands on a cloudy day. I don’t know about you, but when a dress has pockets, it is an instant ten! I’ll add the link to this dress so we can all errand in style.

Tuesday

Target head-to-toe

There is a v special section in my heart for Target, so I’m proud to say this entire outfit was from the same place. If I’m out running errands, it’s usually on a Tuesday. This outfit was totally fine for grocery shopping, I definitely would have changed the shoes to a brown or gold flat, but no major complaints.

Wednesday

Black button up + green striped skirt

Midweek church service outfit. Ok, this is when I started cringing. My mother is trying to capture my style so far she’s picked a lot of things that accent my waist, and I appreciate that, but on this one, I could feel my eye twitch. The weird part is, nothing is terribly wrong with it, I just never would have picked it out for myself! So, not bad, just different.

Thurs

day

Target head-to-toe

Shirt, dress, mules, even the suitcase all from Target! I had a quick day trip out of town, so I was grateful for this crazy comfortable outfit. Major problem though, the quarter length top is navy + white, and the mules are black. That’s a big fat no-no in my book! Navy compliments golds and browns, black goes with everything else. There are exceptions to this rule of course, but I was not digging this look.

Friday

Shein top, layered skirt, pom-pom pumps

I didn’t tell my mother I was going to a wedding on Friday, but that mother’s intuition kicked in, and she picked my favorite pom-pom pumps for me! Along with this grid print dress (that I converted into a top) from Shein and a long ruffled layering skirt. Once again, this isn’t something I would have picked out for myself, although that’s what makes it fun! Here’s a link to the dress!

Saturday

Blush blouse, Anne Klein skirt, ankle boots

No real plans on this Saturday, just a little coffee and shopping. Since Texas was a whopping 39° on this day, I had to add tights to this outfit. This ensemble isn’t that horrible to me, but it’s a little edgy Madeline, and I would definitely save these colors for the Spring.

Sunday

Shein blazer, pencil skirt, ModCloth heels

This blazer is one of my favorite pieces in my closet right now! This is the classic with a twist I mentioned before, is it plaid, black, long, short? It’s everything, and I adore it. However, I do not adore these shoes with it. Outfits need one standout piece; everything else should be pretty basic, A cooky top means the skirt + shoes should be v plain to compliment the piece. Here the shoes and blazer are fighting for the attention. I would have put a simple pointed toe pump with this just to balance the classic with the quirk.

So, that was my week! Some outfits worked, others completely flopped, but it was totally fun, and I tried some new things. Did you notice all seven of those outfits had something in common? They all had some form of stripes! Looking back now I don’t know if my mother really likes stripes or that’s all she had to choose from. Overall rating: B+. Good job, mom!
